This page serves as a directory of graduate-level programs in applied linguistics. Its main purpose is to help prospective students find PhD/EdD programs that might match their scholarly interests as well as their career goals. Additionally, many applied linguistics programs are hard to find through online searches because they go by different names and because they are housed in many different types of departments and colleges/schools. This directory seeks to make them easier to find. Another goal of this page is to promote the field of applied linguistics and the graduate programs where much of the research and training of applied linguists takes place. As of now, only US-based programs are included, but I hope to add programs from other countries in the future. For more information on this directory, please see the FAQ below.
Q: Is there a ranking of doctoral programs in applied linguistics?
A: No, program/university rankings are entertaining but inherently flawed. This is simply a directory of programs.
Q: Do programs pay to be on this list?
A: No.
Q: My university isn’t on the list. Can it be added?
A: Yes! Any doctoral program that specializes in applied linguistics or related fields (e.g., SLA, language education, educational linguistics) can be added. Get in touch with Luke Plonsky.
Q: Why are some of the programs here in linguistics or language education, not applied linguistics.
A: Applied linguistics is an inherently interdisciplinary field. I've included doctoral programs with other names where I know applied linguistics research and training occurs, but I realize this is a judgment call and that some people might disagree with what I'm calling applied linguistics.
Q: Some of the information about my university isn’t accurate. Can this be fixed?
A: Yes! Please send any updates or corrections to Luke Plonsky.
Q: Why doesn’t the list include programs outside the US?
A: There are lots of outstanding AL programs outside of the US. The choice to initially include programs in the US only was simply because they’re more easily comparable and they’re easier to collect information about. I hope that future iterations of this directory will include programs outside the US.
Q: Who made this list?
A: Luke Plonsky
Q: Can I advertise my program on this website?
A: Maybe? If you’re interested, get in touch!
Q: Are all of these programs at the doctoral level?
A: Yes! But I might make a separate directory for MA-level programs later on. Also, many of these programs also have MA programs. I hope to add that information to the database/website at some point in the not-too-distant future.
Q: It would be useful to have additional info about each program such as the number of faculty members, what they're areas of expertise are, etc. Will that info be added at some point?
A: Yes, that the plan!
Q: Where can I learn more about finding, applying to, getting funding for a PhD/EdD in applied linguistics?
A: Great question. I very highly recommend a chapter that Ayşenur Sağdiç and Dan Isbell wrote on this topic, which you can download here.
